As much as we love Bali, Indonesia literally has thousands of other tropical paradises for you to enjoy, sans the throngs of tourists.

With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia has no shortage of islands that provide tranquility, idyllic sunshine and clear waters, as far as the eye can see. But somehow, we often end up in the usual Bali, Labuan Bajo or even remote Raja Ampat.

If peace, quiet or adventure away from the throng of tourists is what you’re after, we’ve rounded up a list of under-the-radar islands for you to consider, ranging from the completely unspoiled to the ultra luxurious.

1. Moyo Island, West Nusa Tenggara

If the idea of a picturesque island without luxury accommodation and wifi does not sound like paradise to you, then Moyo Island should be on your list. Toeing the line between FaceTime and your desired “me time” might be hard, but this island can offer a seamless transition between the two.

Seemingly hidden in the Flores Sea, Moyo Island offers serenity and unparalleled amenities as one of the five spots in the country that houses an Aman resort. Amanwana is a unique luxury retreat in a protected national reserve, coexisting peacefully with the ecosystem it both showcases and protects.

Located close to our favorite neighbor, Singapore, is Joyo Island in the Riau archipelago, known for its pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. With accommodation modeled on  tree houses and made of driftwood salvaged from the sea, the island resort offers the Robinson Crusoe getaway you’ve always dreamed of.

Don’t worry, it is also equipped with wifi and all the things you need in your conventional modern life.

3. Isle East Indies, North Jakarta

Nestled among the Thousand Islands of North Jakarta, the adventure that awaits in this 1-hectare private island would appeal to history enthusiasts. Overlooking a white sandy beach is a “colonial antique” styled accommodation, where guests are allowed absolute privacy and tranquility, worlds away from the noise of the city located just a few hours away.

To reach the island, come aboard the Raden Mas, a vintage sailing yacht. Legend has it that the boat was built over 40 years ago by a British aristocrat, but now has been transformed into the ultimate vessel to transport guests to a unique private getaway.

4. Simakakang Island, West Sumatra

For adventurous surfers, we strongly suggest that you bring your board and wax to Simakakang Island in the Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra. With world-class waves, a rich underwater scene and a tropical rainforest, the island sounds like what tropical adventure dreams are made of.

The lone Aloita Resort on this island will provide all the amenities and conveniences you need. American Surfer Phil Edwards said it best, “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun.”

5. Krakal Island, Central Java

If a more authentic island getaway is what you’re looking for, then start making plans for Krakal Island, located in the middle of Karimunjawa Marine National Park in Central Java.

Thanks to Kura Kura Resort on Menyawakan Island, you can take a one-hour boat ride to the small Krakal Island nearby and feel what it’s like to have a slice of unspoiled paradise with just six of your favorite people, at least for one night. In exchange for raw natural beauty and exotic birds, however, the island has a complete absence of electricity or kitchen facilities. Imagine it: The ocean breeze and the sound of the waves with only the stars for lights, what can be better than that?
